21st Century Learning Centers The Carson City School District and Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada are partners in a unique after-school program at two schools in the district, Bordewich-Bray Elementary, and Carson Middle School. These programs have both an academic and enrichment component to them. The programs are designed to help students meet Nevada State Standards in Reading, Math, Writing, and Science. Students are provided with a snack and also receive assistance with their homework during the time that they are enrolled in the program. Certified schoolteachers teach all classes!! Dolphin ClubDolphin Club is the after-school program held at Bordewich-Bray. Students in grades 3-5 are invited to join this program based on their test scores and teacher recommendations. Dolphin Club meets every Monday through Thursday from 3:00-4:30 PM. At 4:30, the late bus departs and Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is the first stop!! The Club is open until 6:30. Once at the Club, students can participate in a variety of activities ranging from additional homework help to sports to art projects. All students enrolled in Dolphin Club receive a FREE membership to the Boys & Girls Clubs! The Club is also open during all school breaks. HSPPHSPP is Carson Middle School’s after school program. CMS guidance office staff members choose the students invited to this program. These students receive help in one of three areas, based on their individual need. Some students receive help in either English/Language Arts, Math or, simply, homework from 2:15 until 3:30. At 3:30, students have the choice to take the late bus to The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada or stay and participate in enrichment activities. From 3:30 to 4:30, teachers provide fun, enrichment activities such as Recycling Club, Guitar class, Computer Lab, Knitting, and many more. At 4:30, the HSPP bus departs the school and will take members to The Boys & Girls Club. In addition to The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, the 21st Century programs are fortunate to have many other community partners. UNR Cooperative Extension, Brewery Arts Center, the Nevada State Museum, Sierra NV Journeys, Capital City Arts Initiative, Ron Wood Family Resource Center, and the Carson City Sheriff’s Department
all provide some sort of activity or support to these programs. These organizations and agencies come into the schools to provide students with science-based activities, theater arts, Nevada history and culture, fine and cultural arts, and DARE, just to name a few. If you have questions about any of the after-school programs, please contact Stephanie King at 224-5594. |
